Discussions, Recommendations, And Inspiration For Book Lovers

Vesna Main is the author of several novels and short stories. She was born in Zagreb, Croatia, where she gained a BA in English and Comparative Literature. Very early in her life, her sense of not belonging to any particular national culture led her to the idea of studying literary texts across national and linguistic boundaries. Passionate about Shakespeare, Main completed an MA in Shakespeare Studies and a Phd in Elizabethan Drama at the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham. She has taught literature at universities in Nigeria, Croatia, and the UK

Her publications include a collection of short stories, Temptation: A User’s Guide (Salt 2018), a novel in dialogue, Good Day? (Salt 2019) – shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize – an
autofiction, Only A Lodger  . . . And Hardly That (Seagull Books, 2020), and a novella ‘Bruno and Adèle in Shorts III (Platypus Press 2021).

Main’s latest novel, Waiting for A Party, will be published by Salt in August 2024. Vesna Main shares her time between London and a village in France. She writes only in English, her second language.

Her literary pantheon includes Franz Kafka, Marcel Proust, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett, Marguerite Duras, Gabriel Josipovici, Thomas Bernhard, W.G.Sebald, Laszlo Krasznahorkai, Ann Serre and Anna Burns.

In her writing, she follows Edouard Manet in believing that art, including literature, should be of our time and she strives to develop narrative techniques that are suitable for our age of doubt and that question the old truths.

Apart from literature, Vesna Main is passionate about art, photography, French films and animal rights. She is vegan.
